Special needs

The following overview is by no means complete for people with a handicap. It should, still, provide a good start in exploring the particular opportunities of living and working without borders and barriers. Go to europa.eu for an exhaustive overview on European initiatives and associations.

European commonalities and differences

Rules and regulations on disability and disabled access are not unified across the EU. That is why a document from the authorities in one country in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine does not automatically grant the same rights in another member state. On the other hand, some places might grant you services and discounts you did not think about in your (current) country of residence.

As a positive example, the European parking card is recognised in most EU- and all three countries in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. For detailed information head to youreurope, which is in all EU languages.

For travelling across borders beyond the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, youreurope has a quick-check for travelling by train or plane guide covering those with special needs and reduced mobility.

Euregio

Find information on European associations such as euroblind.org (with ressources and useful links), autismeurope.org and eud.eu – the European Union of the Deaf with information in 109 languages.

Information on special needs in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine is not yet without borders and quite limited (below). In most cases, you will have to check the regulations in each country, as listed here.

Getting around

The best advice is to check for applicable accounts and conditions in the three countries. You find a first overview here, an appointment with respective service enlisted might lead to more clarification for your individual case.

As always, note that there is the general option of the Euregioticket, a day-ticket that allows travel across the Euregio Meuse-Rhine for €19 (on weekends the ticket is valid for two passengers).

Sport and leisure activities

Please find an overview for each part of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine below.

Also note, that most of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine’s first and second league teams, including football clubs also offer special conditions and a community of supporters among people with a disability. For deciding on which team to support, head to our sports and clubs section for more information.
